Mucksmart: simplifying nutrient management

PlanSmart

PlanSmart is exactly what it says: Planning - How can we make the best use of the muck we have?

  • What is in the soil already?  Muck contains very valuable sources of Phosphate and Potash as well as Nitrogen but knowing what's already available from the soil reserves will save money.
  • How much is in the muck? Getting an idea of what nutrients is in the muck and how much your putting on will enable clearer fertiliser planning.
  • Apply it where it is neededIf your soil indices on your fields are showing high P & K indices then your not going to get the full value of the muck. Target low index fields to build P & K.
  • Apply it when the crop needs it: Nitrogen does not hang around so applying it in November when nothing is really growing is a waste of time and money.
  • Apply it within the rules. Understanding the rules of when, how and where to spread will ensure compliance with rules like NVZs.

Mucksmart workshops explain why each of these points are important and how to use them. Each workshop can provide:

  • FREE Slurry testing and analysis
  • FREE Soil testing (limited to 2 fields)
  • FREE Fertiliser Planning Training

Timing of application is very important. The example below shows why in financial terms.

  • Apply 40m3 per hectare (3500 galls/ac) of typical slurry in December and get 30 kg Nitrogen worth £16.80/ha. (24kg P & 128kg K)
  • Apply the same slurry in March and you get 44kg of Nitrogen for the crop worth £24.64/ha (24kg P & 128kg K)
  • Extra benefit = £7.84/ha = £784 per 100 ha or 1.5 tonnes of fertiliser.
  • Test Your slurry - Know how much is being applied. Use MANNER
  • Test Your soil & assess SNS - Know what's already there.
  • Check crop Requirement - How much is needed - Use RB209
  • Top up with confidence - save money
